Former Schools To Be Demolished For New Housing Next To Commonwealth MRT
The two former schools will make way for new housing next to Commonwealth MRT in the coming years as the Government prepares to introduce more housing supply. The site is approximately 7.6 ha – equivalent to the size of about ten football fields – and home to former New Town Primary School and New Town Secondary School.
The site is large enough for more than one housing project and is suitable for both public homes and private homes. Currently private homes are under development near Buona Vista MRT while public homes are under development near Queenstown MRT.
This new housing site next to Commonwealth MRT could see new private homes in the line-up to diversify the demographics as public housing is predominantly found there. It is also noted that the old flats in Tanglin Halt have already been vacated under the previous SERS exercise carried out previously. The Commonwealth / Tanglin Halt area would see rejuvenation of younger demographics and intensification of housing plots that will provide a good supply of prime housing options.
The new housing site could be assigned a plot ratio in the range of 2.8 up to 5.1 by URA but it is likely to be in the upper range as residential plots next to a MRT Station and in the central region is hard to come by.
Commonwealth MRT Station is located on the East West Line of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Singapore. It is 1 station away to Buona Vista MRT Interchange and 6 stations to Raffles Place MRT Interchange. It is also conveniently located near to popular lifestyle enclaves such as Holland Village, Star Vista and business hubs such as One-North and Mediapolis.
